Gun Control

Another polarizing topic in the current political sphere is gun regulation and issues surrounding the second amendment. The left believes that guns are inherently dangerous and should not be allowed or legalized in the slightest especially automatic weapons whereas the far right believes that it is in their second amendment right to own a gun. The second amendment says word for word “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”. The line “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” is the line being debated. While the line does say that the right to have guns shall not be infringed, the first issue is if that comma changes the meaning of the entire phrase. Leftists make the argument that the comma changes the meaning of the amendment to refer to the Militia as a whole and not the people and thus restricting it is not a violation of the second amendment. However, the SAPA (Second Amendment Protection Act) was recently passed in the Senate was a Republican made bill that protects the second amendment and stops gun control restrictions. However, this bill is actually really bad for America as a whole. As this bill also protects Automatic weapons which is the main issue I have with it. While I agree with the Right's view of the necessity of gun’s for personal safety, I also disagree with their extremism in the protection of all guns. Looking at models from other countries and comparing them to US past years, NPR concluded that US gun deaths have risen 25% since last year. These guns are very clearly being misused and that is why the US has the highest rate of gun deaths out of every major developed country. On the lower side of the scale, the Netherlands and Finland both have extreme gun restrictions. Empirically, solutions that work in these areas do not always work in the US due to differences in population size, demographic differences, radicalization and differing reports controlled by the media. However, in this situation I believe that we could do a semi-model, in which you ban all Automatic weapons but still keep handguns and sidearms allowed as reports show that in the majority of these situations it is automatic weapons being used. This solution is romantic but not feasible as both the majority of the public and the government would refuse action such as this.
